The Gulbenkian Foundation, the most important foundation in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe, has awarded its 2017 Knowledge Prize to the Portuguese Mathematical Society, for the organization of the Mathematics Olympiad. This competition is the widest scientific initiative in Portugal for high school students. It was started in 1980 and the Coimbra Mathematics Department has played a decisive role in the organization ever since. CMUC is proud to support the associated Project Delfos, also based at the Coimbra Mathematics Department, which is in charge of selecting and training the Portuguese teams for international mathematics olympiads.
