Adérito Araújo was appointed President of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI). He will take up his duties on 1 January 2018. After having held the position of Vice-President in the last two years, he will, from now on, lead the European institution.
ECMI is a consortium of academic institutions and industrial companies that acts co-operatively with the following aims: - To promote and support the use of mathematical modelling, simulation, and optimization in any activity of social or economic importance. - To educate Industrial Mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. - To operate on a European scale. Through several initiatives in research, teaching or the transfer of technology, ECMI has made a decisive contribution to strengthen industrial mathematics in Europe by facilitating the access of companies to the knowledge and know-how of academia.

In Portugal, the institutional members of ECMI are the CMUC, the Department of Mathematics of IST (Lisbon) and CMUP (the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Porto).
