Description: |
The first known references to matrix functions can be found in the works of Cayley, Laguerre, Peano and Sylvester in the second half of the 19th century. However, just in the last decades of the 20th century we assisted to a growing interest in developing methods for the computation of matrix functions. The great number of problems in science and engineering involving matrix functions has, in part, motivated much of this interest. In this presentation, after defining a matrix function, we give examples of the most popular matrix functions and list some of the most important applications. Then, we review the computational methods for general and particular matrix functions and point out related issues that need further research.
