Supercharacter theories, root systems and set partitions

Description:  In this talk, we survey the basics of supercharacter theories of finite groups with particular emphasis on the finite classical groups of Lie type. We will discuss some (mysterious) connections with the combinatorics of the underlying root system, and show how some supercharacter-theoretic questions may be translated into questions concerning nestings and crossings of set partitions.
